Meet The Researcher Showcase 2023

Over 220 Senior 4, 5 and 6 pupils from 12 schools swapped textbooks for test tubes as they attended our biggest and most exciting Meet the Researchers Showcase event at the Technology Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde.

Taking place for the first time since the pandemic, the event allowed school pupils with an interest in science or considering studying a STEM subject to meet our inspiring young PhD students who conduct cutting-edge research into a range of health-related problems.

Beginning with presentations from industry experts including our Chair, Professor Heather Wallace, Board of Trustees member, Dr Alec McLean and Dr Michele Zagnoni of the University of Strathclyde, the pupils had the opportunity to learn more about science and the career journey into medical research.

Coming from across the country, pupils also met students and lecturers from leading Scottish universities as well as being challenged to put their science skills to the test across twenty fun and interactive science demonstrations. Many of the young scientists the pupils met are studying at Scottish universities, thanks to funding from Medical Research Scotland.

Professor Heather Wallace, Chair of Medical Research Scotland, said: “Today’s pupils are our next generation of medical researchers who, in future, could very well make the research discovery of their generation.

“This really is a chance for the pupils to find out more about the opportunities within medical research from the experts so it’s been fantastic to see how engaged they have been in our first in-person event since the pandemic.

“We want to provide a taste of the career opportunities in medical science and other STEM areas to the pupils and I hope we’ve helped ignite a passion for science.”
