This project will investigate the final step of the cell division cycle where the newly formed ‘daughter cells’ separate. We know that cells need to redistribute their contents, including the membranes that surround different cell components, during this process to equally divide, but the mechnisms which control this are not completely understood. When these mechanisms go wrong, cancerous growth may result. This summer studentship will allow Aoife the chance to identify key components of this machinery. We will use selective gene inactivation strategies to identify such components. This will offer her the chance to learn state-of-the-art technology.
