Archive News - Donations Received

During the course of any year, we are fortunate to receive gifts, legacies and other donations. These are all received with gratitude by the Members and are listed in the Annual Report & Accounts. While all such donations are welcome, however small, we provide here a little more information about any that are particularly noteworthy.

Anonymous Benefactor for Pain Management Research

In February 2007, Medical Research Scotland received a substantial legacy from an anonymous benefactor who had stipulated that the funds be used for research into heart disease and into pain management. The charity routinely receives applications for research project grants related to heart disease; it receives few for research into the management of pain. It has therefore decided to take the unusual step of actively publicising the availability of earmarked funds for work in this important field and looks forward to receiving a number of suitably high-quality, innovative research project proposals to consider. Applications should be made for Medical Research Scotland's Research Project Grants, which are for a maximum value of £150,000 over up to three years' duration.

Legacy from Mrs Mary Tyson

Mrs Mary Tyson lived in Dumfries and, following receipt of a generous legacy from her estate, the Members decided to create a new Fellowship for the Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health Professions. These areas have always fallen within the funding remit for Medical Research Scotland, but very few applications have been successful in reaching the required standards. We will continue to fund high-quality biomedical research and young scientists and clinicians at the start of their careers but, by establishing this Fellowship on a trial basis, the Members hoped that some high-quality applications would be received from members of the Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health Professions. The first Tyson Research Fellowship was awarded to Dr Bridget Johnson of the Cancer Care Research Centre at Stirling University.
