Changes to the Membership during the 2007 calendar year
The several changes to Membership occurring during the year are listed below. Some of these were as replacements for Members who had retired or resigned; others were to ensure the continued breadth of scientific expertise among the Members necessitated by independence. The appointments are of varying duration, to allow for phased rotation.
- Dr Graham Beastall retired from Membership with effect from 31 March 2007, having served two full terms as a Member and having been Vice-Chairman for the previous year.
- Dr Denise Coia, Principal Medical Officer, Mental Health, in the Scottish Government Health Department (4 years from 31 May).
- Professor Margarete Heck, Professor of Cell Biology & Genetics, Centre for Cardiovascular Science, University of Edinburgh, (3 years from 1 August). [Professor Heck subsequently (May 2008) resigned from Membership.]
- Professor Allan Mowat, Professor of Mucosal Immunology & Honorary Consultant Clinical Immunologist, Division of Immunology, Infection & Inflammation, University of Glasgow (4 years from 13 November).
- Professor Stephen Wigmore, Professor of Transplantation Surgery, MRC Centre for Inflammation Research, Queen's Medical Research Institute, University of Edinburgh (4 years from 13 November).
Appointments during the 2006 calendar year
Several appointments were made during the year and they are listed below. Some of these were as replacements for Members who had retired, having completed terms of office which had been extended to cover the transition to independence; others were made to ensure the breadth of scientific expertise among the Members necessitated by independence. The appointments are of varying duration, to allow for phased rotation of the Membership.

- Professor William (Bill) Cushley, Professor of Immunology, Division of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Glasgow.
- Professor Paul Garside, Director, Centre for Biophotonics, University of Strathclyde.
- Professor David J. Harrison, Cancer Research Centre, University of Edinburgh
- Dr Karen Horsburgh, Centre for Neuroscience Research, University of Edinburgh
- Mr John Naylor, OBE, (then Chair Designate, now Chair of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) and former Chief Executive of the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust.
- Ms Fiona Nicolson, Partner, IP & Technology Department, Maclay Murray & Spens, Solicitors, Glasgow (4 years from 20 February).
- Professor Michael Steel, Emeritus Professor in Medical Science, Bute Medical School, University of St Andrews.
- Professor Ian A Greer, Deputy Dean, Regius Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Glasgow. [Professor Greer subsequently (August 2006) resigned from Membership.]
