The largest Scottish charity funder of healthcare research
Medical Research Scotland supports Scotland's promising young researchers as they carry out work aimed at improving the health of the nation.
Scotland's population suffers from undesirably high levels of many diseases, including: cancer, heart disease, stroke, rheumatic diseases, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Medical Research Scotland supports research into all these and many more.
Medical Research Scotland is committed to:
- to making a difference to people in the early stages of their careers in medical research. Funding is normally directed to those under 35 years of age and whose research is being carried out in Scotland
- supporting only the highest-quality research, so all funding applications receive stringent review by international experts working in related fields.
It supports many different types of clinical and laboratory-based medical research, which is aimed at improving understanding of the basic mechanisms of disease processes; or the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease; or the advancement of medical technology.
The grants Medical Research Scotland makes are in the form of Research Project Grants for defined research projects. Medical Research Scotland prefers to provide 'pump-priming' support or support feasibility studies which would allow the applicants to go on to receive mainstream funding, from the Research Councils or major research charities.
