£61,405 over 18 months to Dr Rona L. Carmichael, Proessor Nigel R. Webwter & Dr Helen F. Galley (Anaesthetics & Intensive Care, Aberdeen University) for a study of the interleukin-8 gene and abnormalities of gas exchange following cardiopulmonary bypass.

£60,005 over two years to Drs Peter C. Hayes & John N. Plevris (Medicine, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) and Drs Ian H. Sadler & John A. Parkinson (Chemistry, Edinburgh University) for the identification of anovel compound present in patients with chronic hepatic encephalopathy and an investigation of its role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

£69,369 over two years to Dr Ian Dransfield (Rayne Laboratories, Edinburgh University) and Professor Christopher Haslett (Respiratory Medicine Unit, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) to investigate the regulation of neutrophil function by soluble E selectin in inflammatory cells and lung injury.

£15,170 over two years to Dr Charles Deehan (Beatson Oncology Centre, Western Infirmary Glasgow), Dr Thomas E. Wheldon (CRC Beatson Laboratories, Glasgow University) and Professor Alex T. Elliott (Clinical Physics, Western Infirmary Glasgow) for radiobiological modelling of new strategies for clinical radiotherapy.

£1,235 for a 5-month pilot study to Dr Lawrence Elliott (School of Nursing & Midwifery, Dundee University) Dr Avril Taylor (Behavioural Studies, Scottish Centre for Infection & Environmental Health, Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow) and Mr Simon Ogston (Epidemiology & Public Health, Dundee University) to study the long-term impact of needle exchanges on injecting-related risk behaviour.

£67,139 over two years to Dr Ingolfur Johanessen & Professor Dorothy H. Crawford (Medical Microbiology, Edinburgh University) for the definitiion of EBV latency/persistence and reactivation using a Scid mouse model.

£68,118 over two years to Drs Michael J. Rogers & Meip Helfirch and Professor Stuart H. Ralston (Medicine & Therapeutics) and Professor Michael Greaves (Haematology, Aberdeen University) to study the antitumour effects of bisphosphonates in multiple myeloma.

£30,415 over one year to Dr Malcolm P. Caulfield (Pharmacology & Neuroscience, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, Dundee) for a study of metatropic glutamate receptors in cerebellar Purkinje neurones.

£13,807 to Dr Meilien Ho, Professor Jill F. Belch & Dr Margaret McLaren (Medicine, Dundee University) and Professor George Nuki (Medicine, Western General Hosptial, Edinburgh) for a pilot study lasting three months to investigate oxidised low density lipoprotein and homocysteinaemia sclerosis.

£69,082 to Dr Kenneth Simpson (Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) and Dr David Harrison (Pathology, Edinburgh University) for a two-year study of chemokines in paracetamol toxicity with the long-term goal of developing gene therapy for hepatic regenation.

£28,076 over one year to Professor John E. Fothergill & Dr William T. Melvin (Molecular & Cell Biology) and Dr Graeme I. Murray (Pathology, Aberdeen University) to study the role of matrix metalloproteinases in tumour invasion.

£33,671 over one year to Dr Colin D. McCaig (Biomedical Sciences) & Professor John V. Forrester (Ophthalmology, Aberdeen University) to investigate sprouting nerves and healing cornea.

£66,558 over 18 months to Drs Faisel Khan, Margaret McLaren, Stephen A. Greene & Alexander Hill and Professor Jill F. Belch (Medicine, Dundee University) to study the effects of oral antioxidants and L-arginine on macrovascular function in young people with Type I diabetes mellitus.

£69,674 over two years to Dr Peter D. Currie (Human Genetics Unit, Edinburgh University) for the identification of downstream mediators of the secreted signalling moelcule Sonic Hedgehog.

£61,416 over 18 months to Dr Mark E.S. Bailey & Professor Keith J. Johnson (Division of Molecular Genetics) and Dr Alison Kerr (Psychological Medicine), Drs Goran A. Jamal & Peter Oketa-Onyut Julu (Neurology, Glasgow University) for an investigation of GABAa receptor subunit genes on the X chromosome ascandidates in Rett Syndrome (Dr Bailey was also awarded the Cruden Scholarship as part of his funding for this project).

£60,092 over two years to Dr W. Nicol Keith (CRC Medical Oncology), Dr James J. Going (Pathology) and Mr Robert C. Stuart (Surgery, Glasgow University) to investigate the role of telomerase expression and replicative ageining in Barrett's oesophagus.

£98,855 over three years to Drs Allan Mowat & Paul Garside (Immunology, Glasgow University) to investigate cellular mechanisms of bystander tolerance induced by oral administration of antigen.


The Nasmyth Travelling Research Scholarship 1998-2000 was awarded to Dr David C. Howe (Centre for Reproductive Biology, Edinburgh University) to visit the Laboratory for Pregnancy & Newborn Research at Cornell University and the Department of Physiology at the University of Toronto. His research will be into the effects of high levels of hormones circulating in the plasma on the growing foetus and on the part they play in controlling the onset of labour.
